Restore Marble Countertop Singapore
Have a marble countertop in your home? First of all, congratulations on your wise choice. Marble is indeed very beautiful and durable if well taken care of, making it an excellent addition to your lovely kitchen. Compared to other stones like granite and quartz, it is undeniably versatile in terms of practicality and design, serving both as a capable work surface and a pleasing natural ornament that matches with pretty much any backgrounds and decoration. However, marble, being limestone in origin, is soft and porous in nature, thus it is susceptible to scratches and stains from regular contact and use.
Restore To Full Health
If you’re unfortunate to be one of the many victims of accidental marble damage, don’t worry, it is not the end of the world. Marble restoration is a process which effectively revert your old and battered marble countertop into its former glorious self. The good news is that it is not difficult to perform at all, provided that you have the right tools and technique for the job.
The Five Steps To Success
Basically, marble restoration can be divided into five main steps – cleaning, honing, polishing, buffing and sealing. Let’s get right into it. First, using a special marble stone cleaner, gently clean your marble countertop with a soft cotton cloth or sponge. Wipe away the cleaner with a clean cloth.
Then, cordon off the scratched area with masking tape. It is best to leave at least a distance of five centimetres between the work area and the masking tape at all sides. Now you can begin honing, which is a process of sanding the marble surface to remove scratches and stains by the dozen. This step involves attaching a sanding pad to a variable-speed grinder and sanding the cordoned area. The result should leave you with a uniform and level surface.
After that, start polishing with a low-speed polisher. First use a coarse grit diamond polishing pad, then move on to finer grades in a stepwise sequence. Usually, a minimum of three pads of different grades are required for a complete polish.
Buffing, also known as crystallisation, is a chemical process whereby a unique chemical agent is applied on your marble surface to remove stubborn stains. It also adds to the strength and durability of the marble, making it more resistant to future damage.
The last step is to coat your marble countertop with a marble sealant. Apply this compound just as you did for the aforementioned marble cleaner. This closes up the minute pores in the stone and ensures your marble surface is waterproof.
