Marble Floor Care Singapore
What is the similarity between the Greek statue Venus de Milo and the Taj Mahal of India? Besides being important works of art and their worldwide popularity, these structures are made of marble. Marble is arguably the most beautiful stone you can use to tile your floors, with its pure white surface laced with streaks of natural and vivid colours. However, great care must be given to enhance and prolong its great beauty.
Best Ways To Clean
When cleaning your marble floor, it is important to keep in mind what marble actually is – calcium carbonate. If you study or have studied Chemistry in school, you should know that this compound does not fare well in acidic conditions. Therefore, acidic liquids such as vinegar should never be allowed to contact marble, lest your beloved marble flooring will slowly turn to dust.
Optimally, a marble floor should be wiped with a cotton cloth soaked with a marble-friendly cleaning solution. A homemade recipe for this solution is to dissolve three tablespoons of baking soda in a litre of warm water. An alternative would be mixing half a cup of dishwashing liquid in a bucket of warm water. After wiping the floor with the cloth, it is recommended to rinse the floor with clean warm water and then dry it with a soft towel. Due to its high porosity, water – if left on the surface – can seep in between tiny stone particles and leave an ugly stain.
Polished Upkeeping
So you have recently polished your marble floor? If the answer is yes, then it is wise to protect the floor from scratches, which it is now made more vulnerable to due to the polish. The majority of scratches are from furniture, hence they should always be placed on a carpet or floor rug. Alternatively, you can put protective pads under the legs of tables and chairs. These pads come in various shapes and sizes, and should safeguard the marble floor against furniture moving across its surface.
Good cleaning techniques will also help protect against unwanted scratches. A dust mop should be used instead of a regular broom, especially one made of rattan, because its coarse bristles may inadvertently scratch the floor surface. If you have accidentally spilled some liquid on the floor, it is imperative that the spillage is cleared right away and not allow stains to set in the stone. Then, scrub the area with a damp sponge and rinse it with warm water before drying it completely.
